I recently announced that I would be undertaking a new series focusing on our beautiful trees and woodlands of England. I’m pleased to say that this project is now gaining momentum in my studio after my initial start a few weeks ago in which time some work sold before it got to the website gallery.
WHY FOCUS ON TREES?
Personally, I find trees amazing. They provide the materials for furniture, paper, fuel for warmth, mulch for the garden, oxygen, fruit, nuts, homes for birds & other animals, the list goes on, and all this from an initial tiny seed!
MAGICAL PLACES
As if that wasn’t amazing enough, they provide another world, a magical world, where you can find tranquillity and at the same time an air of excitement. When you’re walking through a wood, time doesn’t have a bearing, you could be at any time in history, or even the future. Have you noticed when walking through some woods that the sound of the air changes? It’s particularly evident in pine woods, it’s like a noticeable silence held in by the carpet of pine needles. The quality of the silence is beautiful.
STORIES OF OLD
Think of stories that have used trees and woodlands for the basis of their tale, C.S.Lewis & The brothers Grimm are two that spring to mind. They really gave excitement and depth to the imagination.
MY PAINTINGS
I want my paintings and artwork to reflect the way trees make me feel.
Rather than just being marks on a surface I want to give an impression of a place you could lose yourself in, where the atmosphere is inviting & you could spend hours there soaking up the silence & magic.
THE WORK
So far I have used reference material gathered whilst visiting Cornwall, Yorkshire and The New Forest, Hampshire and I shall be gathering sketches & small studies from The Cotswolds in the next couple of weeks.
I’m working on a preliminary set in watercolours. These will be supplied ready to frame in a mount. In conjunction with these I will be working on some oil and acrylic versions which will be supplied framed and ready to hang.
I will be updating my gallery with new work as it evolves so please visit my gallery pages regularly to view the artwork.
