I love to get underway with a new series but I also like to break away now & then to paint something different.
If an idea comes to mind or I want to experiment, there’s no time like the present. If you don’t grasp the moment it can slip away and never be regained.
WHAT INSPIRES ME TO BREAK AWAY?
Many things can trigger a breakaway from my scheduled work. The observation of the way light strikes a surface, the intense colour of an object and it’s contrasts, shadows trailing across the ground, fluid movement across a surface. These are some things that can inspire me.
HOW DO I USE MY INSPIRATION?
I might not record exactly what I see, after all, I’m talking about being inspired by something, not being moved to copy something exactly.
A shadow from a tree or plant laying across a path might just move me to make a similar mark on my surface, it won’t necessarily be recognisable as a shadow across a path from a tree or plant.
THE ARTIST IS IN FULL CONTROL
Whatever the inspiration and resultant marks I make, I have total control over how i present them. Whether these fit into my abstract, semi abstract or figurative category is my decision but I don’t always plan how a painting will end up and it’s sometimes not until I’m a fair way through my work that I find out which way it’s taking me.
CONCLUSION
A big part of my work is about experimenting with ideas and pushing my own limits to produce something different. To do this my eyes have to be receptive to the world around me and I have to use every opportunity to record what I see, whether abstractly or realistically.
I realise how limitless the opportunities are that surround me and what potential there is for producing an endless variety of art.
