In an artist’s life, improving methods and experimenting are two crucial things. There is always some area to develop with the thought of learning something new and different. One thing I’ve learnt is that trying different approaches to my work yields results. Some results will be successful and others a failure but it’s this process that keeps me moving forward.
I’ve decided to share my methods with those who’d like an insight into my art by outlining what works in my case and maybe just as importantly, what doesn’t. The word failure can conjure negative thoughts but failure is the thing that readjusts our direction and guides us back on course. It teaches us to look at things as a journey with success as the ultimate goal.
Over the years I’ve been asked if I hold workshops or classes and I’ve always said “not at the moment but it’s something I want to look into in the future.” During this time I’ve given a lot of thought to how I can convey my methods to others & build the confidence to put myself at the front of the class so to speak. My main goal is to develop an enthusiasm for the subject. Without this no true art is possible.
Want to find out more about what’s on offer? Soon you’ll be able to see currently available workshops and demos on my website but as a taster, here are the modules I’ll be offering to start with:
PAINTING WITH TEXTURE
Everything around us is made up of textures. Think of paper, wood, sand, water, rock & glass to name a few. Getting texture into a painting can really bring it to life.
This demo will show how I attempt to use texture to create interest in my painting.
EMPHATIC MARK MAKING
All paintings are a series of marks made on a surface, but sometimes they can merge into one another and become nondescript.
This demo will show how I attempt to use marks to create emphasis in a painting.
DRAMA FROM COLOUR & CONTRAST
Creating drama in a painting can be difficult. Using colour and contrast can help.
This demo will show how I attempt to use both of these aspects in my work.
PAINTING DRAMATIC SKIES
Painting the sky can be a challenge.
It is a vast space that can be intimidating.
This demo will show how I attempt to create drama when painting it.
PAINTING LOOSE & FREE
An artist can sometimes be so tied to their subject that their method of working can become rigid and tight.
This demo is designed to show how I attempt to approach my work with looseness and fluidity.
As time progresses I hope to add to these subjects giving more choice to appeal to many. Watch this space for more info and please contact me if you have any questions. Thanks for reading, see you next time.
